🎸 In Hong Kong, the most cost-effective way to care for a guitar—bar none: two-way humidity packs.
This is not an advertisement—it is the conclusion we have reached after years of repairing guitars.
Our Observations
We service over 400 guitars a year, and we also track many customers’ instruments long-term:
- How often each guitar comes back for maintenance
- How customers typically store their guitars
- After a new guitar’s first setup, how long it takes before it comes back for further adjustment
Based on these records, we found that for the same guitar, when it is casually left out in a typical Hong Kong home, wear and deterioration occur at roughly 3–5 times the rate of an ideal environment.
And the lowest-cost way to narrow that gap the most is simply a guitar case plus a pack of two-way humidity packs.
Cheap Dehumidifier Boxes vs Two-Way Humidity Packs: What’s the Difference?
Cheap Dehumidifier Boxes: They Never Stop
The dehumidifier boxes commonly found in Japanese shops and online use drying beads that turn into gel after absorbing moisture, and they are very inexpensive. Most of these products use calcium chloride.
Calcium chloride is a salt. After absorbing water, it dissolves into a saturated solution, pulling the humidity in a sealed space down to around 30%—and it will keep absorbing moisture without stopping.
In a large space such as a wardrobe or a room, it merely helps reduce some moisture, and the risk is limited. But in a small, sealed guitar case, it can genuinely pull humidity down to around 30%. A guitar can go from too wet to too dry, leading to soundboard cracks and fret sprout.
Another issue is leakage. Once saturated, it becomes chlorinated saltwater; if it tips over or breaks, the frets, tuners, hardware, and electronics can corrode, and the finish can also be damaged.
Silica gel desiccants do not turn into liquid, so the leakage risk is lower. However, they still only absorb moisture one-way, and in a small guitar case they can also make the guitar too dry.
Two-Way Humidity Packs: They Know When to Stop
Two-way humidity packs—such as D’Addario Humidipak—use Boveda’s patented technology, and the principle is completely different.
Inside is a saturated salt solution—water with so much salt dissolved that no more can dissolve—so there are still undissolved salt crystals at the bottom. In a sealed space, a saturated salt solution stabilizes the surrounding air at a fixed humidity level, and the exact value depends on which salt is used.
- When the air is too humid, it absorbs moisture; the excess water dissolves the salt crystals at the bottom, keeping the solution saturated.
- When the air is too dry, it releases moisture; some salt recrystallizes, and the solution remains saturated as well.
As long as the solution remains saturated, the case humidity is locked at 45–50%.
The outer layer is a semi-permeable membrane that allows only water vapor to pass through; liquid water and salt cannot, so it will not wet the guitar.
It costs more because it knows when to stop.

⚠️ Important: Humidity packs give no warning when they expire
When a humidity pack is used up, there are two scenarios:
- All moisture has been released, leaving only salt crystals; it will feel hard to the touch
- It has absorbed too much moisture and dissolved all the salt; the pack will swell
The problem is that it becomes ineffective at the moment the last grain of salt dissolves or the last drop of water dries out, but it takes some time before you can feel the change. The safest approach is to replace it by date—do not wait until it turns hard or swells before taking action.
Bottom Line First: This Is Enough for Hong Kong Guitarists
- When not playing, put the guitar back in its case and close it properly.A hard case seals better and works best; a gig bag also works, but the humidity packs will be used up faster.
- Place two-way humidity packs in the case, and replace them at least once every three months.Write the date on the packaging when you open it, and replace it when the time is up.
- Do not leave your guitar in a car, by a window in direct sunlight, or next to an air-conditioner exhaust.
- Do not use cheap dehumidifier boxes or camera dry cabinets as substitutes.
If you do these four things, you will avoid more than half of the most common repair cases we see.
How Unforgiving Is Hong Kong’s Weather for Guitars?
The ideal storage environment for a guitar is around 50% humidity and 20–28°C.
Hong Kong is almost the opposite. According to the Observatory’s 1991–2020 data, Hong Kong’s annual average relative humidity is about 78%, and it often exceeds 80% in spring and summer. In winter, when dry monsoon winds blow, humidity can stay at 30–40% for two to three consecutive weeks—during which even our workshop needs a humidifier.
On top of that, with home air-conditioning and dehumidifiers switching on and off, indoor humidity can swing dramatically within a single day. A guitar is exposed to humidity fluctuations almost all year round.
How Much Does It Cost to Create an Ideal Environment in Hong Kong?
The Ideal Approach
There are two ideal approaches:
- A dedicated temperature-and-humidity-controlled cabinet for guitars
- A room with air-conditioning and a dehumidifier running 24/7
A rough estimate based on 2026 electricity rates:

Actual figures vary by model, room size, and tariff tier. Hong Kong residential electricity is charged on a progressive scale; extra usage may push the whole household into a higher tier, so the real cost of air-conditioning is often higher.
The “80% Effect” Approach
In our experience, having a dehumidifier—or a guitar cabinet with humidity control—already achieves over 80% of the ideal-environment result. Because what truly causes long-term deterioration is humidity, not typical room temperature.
When using it, note the following:
- Setting a dehumidifier to 50–55% is sufficient. Do not run it at maximum or in continuous mode, otherwise the guitar can go from too wet to too dry.
- A dehumidifier can only reduce humidity; in winter, when it is dry, you will need a humidifier as well. If using a guitar cabinet, choose a two-way model that can both dehumidify and humidify.
- Camera electronic dry cabinets are usually set below 40% to prevent lens fungus, which is too dry for guitars.
By comparison, the cost of a pack of two-way humidity packs is only a fraction, requires no power, and can be carried anywhere with the case.
Why Are Guitars So Sensitive to the Environment?
A guitar is essentially wood plus glue. The soundboard-to-sides joint, braces-to-soundboard, bridge-to-soundboard, neck-to-body—every joint is a glue joint.
Humidity: Repeated Fluctuations Are the Biggest Enemy
Wood expands and contracts with humidity, and the force from this deformation is strong enough to cause:
- The soundboard to bulge or sink
- The neck to warp
- Glue joints to crack
- Or even the wood itself to split
Humidity also accelerates rust on frets and strings.
Temperature: Extreme Heat Is the Biggest Enemy
Major brands such as Martin, Taylor, and Gibson mostly use woodworking glues like Titebond. These glues are strong, but at around 65°C they lose about half their bonding strength.
On a steel-string guitar, the strings constantly pull on the bridge, and the glue line gradually develops creep—slow deformation and shifting under load. At normal room temperature, this may take over ten years; but the higher the temperature, the softer the glue line, and the process can shorten to days, or even hours.
In Hong Kong, the following places can easily reach this temperature:
- Inside a private car cabin or trunk
- By a window in direct sunlight
- Near an air-conditioner exhaust
A lifting bridge—or even a bridge coming off entirely—is a very common repair case for us.
High heat and high humidity can also soften and make nitro finishes and shellac finish tacky, making them prone to imprint marks from stands or case lining.
Is It Okay Not to Play It?
In theory, a guitar that is not played long-term and has its strings slackened will last the longest: without tension, the neck will not bow, the bridge will not lift, and the finish and frets will not wear.
Important: after fully slackening the strings, the truss rod should also be loosened accordingly; otherwise, the neck may back-bow.
And even if you do not play it, the wood and glue joints are still affected by the environment. Ultimately, the key is moisture control—dehumidifying and humidifying.
Summary
For guitar care in Hong Kong, the key is not chasing a perfect environment, but avoiding three things: extreme heat, prolonged dampness, and repeated humidity fluctuations.
If budget allows, a temperature-and-humidity-controlled cabinet or a room dehumidified 24/7 offers the best protection. For most players, a guitar case plus a pack of two-way humidity packs is already the most cost-effective and convenient solution.
Compared with a bridge re-glue, soundboard crack repair, or even replacing the guitar, the cost of humidity packs is negligible.
